Day 24 – Something that makes you cry
A lot of things make me cry, but the two things absolutely guaranteed to turn me into a sobbing mess are stories about the relationships between fathers and children, and stories about the passage of time. Because I've got daddy issues, and passage-of-time issues, you know?

The first film I can remember causing me to bawl my eyes out (aside from The Land Before Time, which traumatised me, as it traumatised all 90s children) was A Little Princess. For those of you who don't know, the film takes some liberties with the book's original plot. Rather than having Sara's dad be dead, the film has him having PTSD, losing his memory, and not recognising his own daughter. So yeah, that messed me up.

Hook caused a similar reaction. As did any scene involving Iroh and Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Certain songs ('After the Gold Rush' and 'Heart of Gold' by Neil Young,* 'Graceland' by Paul Simon and 'Deeper Water' by Paul Kelly) also induce floods of hysterical tears, including one memorable occasion in a cafe in front of a whole bunch of people.

Yeah, I'm aware I have issues. But, to be honest, I quite enjoy crying, so it doesn't bother me too much.

*These songs elicit the same reaction from my father. When I was living with him in Canberra, there were numerous occasions when we'd drink a bottle of wine, put on Neil Young and cry.

The Land Before Time

Oh God, yes. I went through a phase when I pretty much became hysterical even at the mention of The Land Before Time.

And I totally get the passage-of-time thing. There's an episode of B5 which I almost can't watch because it's entirely about the passage of time (specifically, how the characters are portrayed in the historiography of their own future, which is weird and mindbending).

Everyone I know has exactly the same reaction to The Land Before Time.

The passage-of-time thing is almost impossible to come to terms with. I guess it's one of those annoying things about being conscious, and being human. Yeah. (By the way, LOVE your icon.)

Thank you. :) I was really happy with the colouring on this icon - and the lyrics from so many songs on that Sarah McLachlan album fit SPN so well.

It's Neil Young's Sugar Mountain does it for me.

Neil Young is pretty good for the inducing of tears, isn't he? *goes to listen to Sugar Mountain*

Nothing will top 'Heart of Gold' for me, though. It once played in a cafe in Cambridge, and I started noisily sobbing, to the extent that I had to leave because it was so embarrassing.

I really love A Little Princess, but even when I was much younger I didn't agree with them 'softening' the movie ending with her father being alive again. Its a beautiful story, and its not like the book ended on too tragic a note - she gets to be raised by her father's friend, who loves her and provides for her with lavish, attentive care, and she's still this wonderful, giving person. The sad things we go through help mould us into the people we are.

I've always thought that they changed the ending because the original ending (12-year-old girl being brought up by a strange older man) would not have been acceptable to a modern audience, rather than in order to 'soften' the original ending.

I don't see why it wouldn't have been alright.. I mean, it's just like any other kid getting adopted. To me it always felt like it was to be less tragic, that she didn't actually lose her father, the person she loved most in the world.

It never even occurred to me that someone might find Sara being adopted by Uncle Tom inappropriate.
